...and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus - Philippians 4:7

Discovering Purpose - Part 1

Updated: Jul 12, 2019

Hey everyone and welcome back to Serenity in The Spirit, I hope you are all doing well :)

In this post, I would like to talk about God’s plan for your life, yes...YOURS! In case you haven’t heard this before or you just need a reminder: God has a plan for your life. He created you with a beautifully and carefully thought out plan in mind. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them - Ephesians ‭2:10‬ ‭ I’m not sure about you, but I went through a point in life  where I was so confused about what I should do and, if I’m being 100% honest, I still find myself wondering what God’s plans for my life actually look like. I haven’t got everything figured out (perhaps like yourself...?) and that is okay. So, how do we find out? How do we walk in His purpose for our lives?

1. Ask Him

Prayer is key in your walk regardless of whether you have everything figured out, or not. If you aren’t Christian, you can still try this even if it seems silly or feels alien to you. I can’t promise God will respond miraculously, showing you some scribbles of what His thoughts were when He created you (even though I believe this is entirely possible) but, I am certain God will hear your prayer. Perhaps consider keeping an open mind (and open eyes and ears) about His response. If you would like to pray about this but you have no idea how to, consider some words such as these: Dear Lord,Thank You for creating me in Your image. I pray and ask for You to reveal to me the plan You have for my life. Help me to understand and discern Your desires for me. Thank You that You want nothing but the best for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen

2. Analyse yourself

What are you good at? What do you enjoy? I believe that God has planted some of these things in our hearts as this is the way we can serve Him and those around us. Don’t worry if your skills/passions do not lead you to a job that is a common pathway or something that makes loads of money - God is a provider and He will never leave you short especially if you are walking in His plans. He will also bless you in ways that aren't just financial. For example, if your passion involves helping others, seeing the positive difference you are making in other people's lives can also bring you fulfillment.

3. Look at your current position

Some people are in their current position through making a series of God-guided decisions. After careful consultation with God, they have been lead to where they are. Some of us, (including myself) didn’t consult God about the decisions that lead to our current position either because we didn’t really think God would be so interested or perhaps you don’t/didn’t believe in Him. The great news is, you can still walk side-by-side with God if you choose to. Remember, as well as our individual purposes, Christians were commissioned by Jesus to spread the good news and make disciples of all nations. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit - Matthew‬ ‭28:19‬ In all situations, you can do just that. Don’t worry if you are shy or you are scared about being Judged. The power of the Holy Spirit lives within you which means you are capable, you have a God-given, supernatural ability. Not only can you fulfil God’s purpose in your life by spreading His word but also through your actions. How you live your life can potentially give those around you an opportunity to see Jesus - and don’t worry, you won’t get it right all of the time but show yourself the grace that God shows you and try again.

I hope this has been helpful. It can be a tricky subject, people have been trying to work out the point of human’s existence for years. I’m convinced that the point of our existence points to our creator, God.
